New York Public Library for the Performing Arts
Managing Librarian
New York
After nearly 25 years in academic music librarianship - 21 of which were at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee - I made the switch to the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts in January of 2019. At UWM I taught a course in Music Librarianship for the library school, and did the same for Long Island University in the fall of 2019. I continue to advocate for good training for music librarians. I am also very interested in cross-arts work in libraries.
My presentation at MLA 2021is in conjunction with Sara White at Academic of Music & Drama-New York and Michelle Lee, an outreach and youth services librarian for the Riverside branch of NYPL. We will be talking about how we developed an outreach program to get students in local institutions to use their public library resources in addition to their own library's offerings. We hope to provide ideas for ways this can be used in smaller towns - to encourage students at small liberal arts schools in rural communities to use archival materials about the history of the local area as inspiration to create new works.
